NEW GENERATION CONCRETE

Use

SOLFINO is a cement based compound that provides a grainer concrete surface and can be applied at paper-thin thickness. When combined with pure SOLATEX acrylic activatorSOLFINO produces the ideal ultra thin resurfacer for both interior and exterior concreteapplications.
SOLFINO is a versatile and excellent wearing concrete surface. Numerous decorative effects can be achieved through the creative use of a trowel, sponge, roller, or spray unit. It provides a fast solution for integrally coloring and resurfacing an interior or exterior concrete. Also, it is a cost-effective solution for resurfacing new or old concrete, broomed, troweled, or creating a multi-layered weathered fresco finish.SOLFINO has been designed to accept many coloration systems.SOLFINO is available in white base and can be integrally custom colored with mineral pigments or water based dyes.

 Features

  • Superior abrasion resistance.
  • Excellent bond strength.
  • Freeze thaw stability.
  • Breathable surface.

Application

Surface preparation

Surfaces must be structurally sound, clean and free of dust, dir t and all surface debris, especially drywall residue, mold, mildew, curing compounds and petroleum based products. Power scrub (floor maintainer with abrasive black stripper pad) or pressure wash surface with detergent/degreaser and clean water, and rinse or wet-vac clean. Allow surface to dry completely before priming, this assists penetration and prevents the dilution of the primer. Prime all surfaces with SOLATEX acrylic activator as per the following guidelines. DO NOT DILUTE. Apply with a garden sprayer and then spread with a broom or mop to assist complete coverage and penetration. Two coats are essential. The first coat should be applied the night prior to installing the overlay, then the second commencing the next morning. Once the milky look has completely disappeared the surface is ready for overlaying. Placing the overlay before the second coat is touch dry may result in bleed and varying white marks on the finished surface. Allow 5 Gallons (19 liters) of SOLATEX to prime 1,000 sq. ft. (100m²) of concrete with two coats, however, this will vary considerably according to surface porosity. An incorrectly primed surface may result in pinholes in the topping and cause incomplete hydration of the product. Overlay must be installed no longer than 6 hours after second coat of primer has been applied.

Mixing

Step 1: Place SOLATEX into a clean garbage can for easy access. Always activate SOLFINO with pure SOLATEX. NOTE: SOLFINO liquid levels are adjustable +/- 10%, however, remember to be consistent. We recommend 4.6 liters of SOLATEX to activate 1 pail of SOLFINO.

Step 2: Using the measure bucket, which has been pre cut to 1.2 gal (4.6 liters), dip and fill once to the pre-cut liquid level and pour into a clean 5 gallon (19 liters) pail. Total amount of liquid needed is 1.2 gal (4.6 liters).

Step 3: Add mineral pigments or water based dyes, if desired into pail and spin for 2-5 seconds.

Step 4: Place 2/3 of SOLFINO powder into the pail and spin with liquid for 30 seconds using a slow speed drill and paddle attachment.

Step 5: Place remaining powder into the pail and mix thoroughly for 60 seconds to disperse all ingredients to a pour able consistency. Consistency should be that of paint and should drip off the mixing paddle readily.

NOTE: SOLFINO can be used over long periods of time, re-temper by adding a small amount of SOLATEX if necessary. However, this could cause a color shift.

Application

SOLFINO is usually applied in two thin coats using a magic trowel or steel trowel. Contractors should perfect their finishing techniques to produce the desired surface. The first coat must be applied ultra thin, do not worry about scratch marks as these will be covered with the second application. When applying the second coat only pour a small amount out onto the surface, do not waste time and energy moving large amounts of material around. Trowel to achieve the desired look and finish as you go. Keep a wet edge and blend from one area to the next, avoid leaving hard lines. Ensure a random pattern by rotating and varying your troweling action. Gently break up any lines or repeating patterns. When applying multiple coats, allow each coat to dry, and then repeat the application. The drying time between coats depends on the ambient temperature, normally a minimum of two hours or once the surface has an even dried colored appearance. It is not necessary to prime between coats. Mist with a light application of water to dampen surface if second coat is applied the next day.

Drying time

This will depend on the ambient temperature and weather conditions. During the summer months SOLFINO is ready for light foot traffic 12 hours after second coat has been sealed. Heavy traffic may require up to 2 days curing depending on temperature. Precautions: during the first few days following application, place protective pads under furniture and wait at least 10 days before putting rugs back in their place. During the first 3 weeks, clean with a damp rag or mop, a soft brush and vacuum cleaner. After this period, common cleaning products can be used but avoid acidic or too alkaline cleaning products. We advise the use of Black Soap or Marseille Soap.

Coverage

There are two types of SOLFINO with the following coverages:

  • SOLFINO FIN – One 22 lb (10kgs) pail covers approximately +/- 300 sq. ft. (30m²) at
  • SOLFINO SUPERFIN- One 20 lb (9kgs) pail covers approximately +/- 300 sq. ft. (30m²) at

Sealing

Surface must be dry and dust free before application of HARDTOP NEW protective system. Use a lacquer roller or a garden sprayer. Apply two or three very thin coats of HARDTOP NEW. They should be at least 2 hours and until 24 hours dry between coats. Take care to apply very thin coats especially with the water based sealers. If a garden sprayer is used, for the second coat spray and back wipe, thus ensuring a continuous membrane is formed. Care must be taken so that sealer is not allowed to form pools or puddles. Installation of sealers will vary but typically a minimum of two coats are required.

See Technical Data Sheets for coverage rates and installation procedures.

Practical advice

Do not apply to frozen surfaces or when temperatures will fall below 50°F (10°C) within the following 24 hours. Temperatures below 60°F (15°C) will extend set time. During cooler months, rain or moisture from dew must be kept off surfaces for a minimum of 24 hours. Full curing of concrete slabs typically takes 28 days. Objects placed and left on the surface for more than 2 days could cause a ghosting effect. Caution should be taken during this curing period. Clean all tools with water immediately after use. Each surface should be finished the same day. All overlapping should be done in corners or door angles. Protect the surrounding areas from splashes or clean with water immediately.

Health caution

Irritating to the eyes and skin. Contains Portland cement and is alkaline on contact with water. During mixing and application avoid contact with eyes. In case of contact, flood eyes repeatedly with water and CALL A PHYSICIAN. Avoid prolonged contact with skin.

Storage advice

SOLFINO and SOLATEX acrylic activator will keep for one year in its original closed packaging. Protect from frost, humidity and high temperatures. The powder mixed must be used within 2 to 3 hrs of preparation. We recommend that you only prepare the quantity required.
